Before watching the movie:

How about a run of titlular duos? And of course one of the most iconic cinematic duos is Bonnie and Clyde. I’d say that perhaps they had already achieved legendary infamy before the movie, but then, I’m even more sure that the movie romanticized and cemented their legacy. Would we be talking about a couple who were robbing banks across a few states almost a hundred years ago without the star power of Beatty and Dunaway keeping them in the public consciousness?

I should disclose that I’ve recently heard a summary of the actual Bonnie and Clyde’s career with commentary on what the movie changed, but I mainly remember just how badly the movie treated Blanche.

Before watching the movie:

I definitely selected this movie because it takes place on New Year’s and not because escaping an upside-down sinking ship with a high fatality rate seemed like an appropriate metaphor for anything.

So, this should be a pretty grounded disaster/survival movie. Trying to navigate rooms on their ceilings, filling with water, should be an interesting challenge to see passengers try to overcome. Continue reading →

Five years ago this month, Yesterday’s Movies officially began. To celebrate half a decade of movie reviews, I’m rewatching some of the highlights and giving them second-look reviews. This week I’m taking another look at the worst movie I ever reviewed, Superman IV.

I remember this being a completely irredeemable movie. The acting phoned in, the story misguided and nonsensical, and the special effects being too terrible to forgive. The only time I couldn’t recommend anyone watch it. So I’m gonna watch it again!

I’m really hoping I’ll find something good about it that I missed the first time. The story is what it is because Christopher Reeve believed in its message, so hopefully I’ll find at least him to be fully committed to the result.

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace

Before watching the movie:

If you’ve heard of this film (and if you haven’t, this thing in front of you is called a computer and the blue thing above you that isn’t made of rock is called the sky), you’ve probably heard its reputation. It’s the movie that almost killed the Superman movie franchise, the last one with Christopher Reeve, and it has a heavy-handed disarmament message, as referenced by its subtitle (the only Superman movie subtitle that isn’t “The Movie,” I might add).

Beyond that, I don’t know what to expect out of it, other than finally having seen every Superman theatrical film. I liked Superman III well enough, but I can agree it was a bad film. From what the entire internet says, this is more of the same, plus an overbearing moral.

After the break, I watch more of the same.
