Before watching the movie:

What I know about this movie is… well, the iconic scene. Surely the plot can’t be as simple as “he gets seduced by an older woman?” Sources seem to indicate it is, but I don’t see how it could have such staying power if that’s all there is. I’m a little comforted by the mention I see that he has no direction in life after graduation, so I guess it’s a coming of age story?

It was not until I had this copy in hand that I realized that the title character was played by a very young Dustin Hoffman. Sure, I’ve seen him mentioned in context with the film a few times, but somehow I never heard “Dustin Hoffman” when people said, “In The Graduate, Dustin Hoffman…” Continue reading →

Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines (Or How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 hours 11 Minutes). 20th Century Fox 1965.

Before Watching the Movie:

I came home for Thanksgiving, and found this movie on loan to my parents from my grandparents. I know nothing about it other than what the box says, which isn’t much. I know it’s a comedy, and that Terry-Thomas has some small, lead-dwarfing cameo in it.

It’s about the early days of flying in the second decade of the 20th century, and the first air race. The box says nothing about the plot, but I would guess that it has loads of characters, much like It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

Batman: The Movie!

Batman: The Movie. 1966 20th Century Fox

Before watching the movie:

No matter how much some may try to forget, Batman lives in two worlds. We eat up the dark, gritty Christopher Nolan style of Batman, with flaws and angst and moral ambiguity now, but fully-invested camp can be just as captivating.

I’ve never seen the 60s Batman, but I hope to jump in with this movie. To be honest, I expected to see Batman and Robin first, but the opportunity for this came up and I took it. I invite you all to join me in this trip through absurdity.
